Dealer or Private Seller: Which Is Better for a First Used Car?

A dealer usually costs more but brings consumer rights that a genuine private sale does not. A private purchase can be good value, but you need to do more of the checking yourself.

Price is not the only difference

At a dealer you are also paying for the dealer's legal responsibilities and overheads. With a private seller, establish that the person is entitled to sell the car and that the story, documents and address make sense.

Inspect either way

Dealer forecourt presentation does not prove mechanical condition, and a friendly private seller does not guarantee it either. History, test drive and inspection still matter.

Do not rush the handover

Confirm payment arrangements, V5C/keeper change, tax, insurance, keys and supplied documents. If anything differs from what was advertised, resolve it before taking the car.

Whether you buy privately or from a dealer, arrange the insurance before collection and check that the policy details match the vehicle you are taking away.
