Do not look only for a pass. The useful information is in the history of failures, advisories and mileage over time.
Repeated advisories tell a story
A tyre advisory followed by replacement is ordinary. The same suspension, corrosion or braking issue appearing year after year can suggest maintenance has been postponed.
Mileage should make sense
Read the recorded mileage chronologically. A small discrepancy can have an innocent explanation, but anything odd deserves clarification before purchase.
Remember what an MOT is not
An MOT is a minimum roadworthiness test at a point in time. It is not a mechanical warranty or proof that the car has been serviced properly.
Once the MOT history looks sensible, add a real insurance quotation to the figures you use to judge the purchase.
