What Should You Check Before Buying a Used Hybrid?

Treat a hybrid as both a conventional used car and an electrified one. Service history, battery-system condition and a worthwhile road test all matter.

HomeUsed-car decisions
Treat a hybrid as both a conventional used car and an electrified one. Service history, battery-system condition and a worthwhile road test all matter.

Know what type of hybrid it is

A conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid behave very differently. Make sure the seller's description matches the actual system and your expectations.

A plug-in only makes sense if you plug it in

If considering a PHEV, think realistically about regular charging. Carrying a large battery without using its electric capability can undermine the reason for choosing it.

Do not let technology obscure basic checks

Tyres, brakes, suspension, bodywork, accident history and all normal used-car checks still apply.

Once the hybrid system suits your usual driving, price the exact car for insurance rather than assuming electrification makes cover cheaper or dearer.
